What your dentist in Provo wants you to knowdental crowns

If you have damaged teeth, or you have a smile full of large, old metal fillings, you may be thinking about getting dental crowns. Dental crowns are an excellent choice to make your smile stronger and more beautiful. Now, thanks to a revolutionary process known as CAD/CAM (computer-aided design/computer-aided manufacturing) you can have your new dental crown on the same day! Dr. Gary Wiest at Provo Dental in Provo, UT, wants to share the benefits of same-day crowns and what they can do for you.

In years past, if you wanted a dental crown, you would have to schedule at least 2 appointments, one for tooth preparation, and the other for a crown cementation. In between, you would have to wait weeks for your new crown to come back from the dental laboratory. During this time, you would have to wear an uncomfortable, unsightly temporary crown until your new crown was finished.

The process has changed dramatically, thanks to CAD/CAM same-day crown technology. Now you can have your tooth prepared and a new crown created all in the same appointment, right in the office, while you wait. These are just a few of the benefits you will enjoy with same day crowns:

  • You will save time, because same day crowns only require one appointment.
  • Your crown will fit perfectly the first time, thanks to CAD/CAM exact measuring technology.
  • Your crown will look completely natural because the crown material is a high-grade dental ceramic that reflects light just like your natural teeth.

CAD/CAM same-day crown technology uses computer-aided measurement along with precise 3D imaging to create a crown that fits your smile perfectly with no adjustments and no remakes. Your new crown will be a unique addition to your unique smile.

You deserve to discover the benefits of same-day crowns for yourself. Now you don’t have to wait to achieve a smile you can be proud of. Enhance your smile in just one appointment with same day crowns. Laying the groundwork for an effective and committed oral care routine early is a crucial part of establishing a good daily dental routine for dental sealantsyour child to avoid teeth decay and gum disease. In addition to a good at-home routine, you can also further prevent cavities in your child’s teeth with dental sealants. But are sealants right for your child? Find out with Dr. Gary Wiest at Provo Dental in Provo, UT.

What is a dental sealant?
Sealants are a super-thin layer of plastic coating placed onto the chewing surfaces of a molar. Molars have naturally-occurring deep crevices which collect decay-causing bacteria. The sealant fills in these deep spots, giving the tooth more surface area and making it easier to clean and less likely to trap food particles or bacteria. The procedure is fast and painless, over in just a few minutes and providing priceless protection against teeth decay. Sealants can last a few years and may need to be retouched by the dentist. While sealants are most popular for children, teens and adults can also benefit from having them placed.

Does my child need sealants?
Everyone can benefit from sealants, no matter their situation. The National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research recommends applying the sealant as soon as the permanent molars erupt through the gums. This protects the teeth right out of the gate, helping to fend off decay before it even occurs. In addition to sealing the molars, your dentist may recommend placing sealants on other teeth with deep pits or grooves.

Dental Sealants in Provo, UT
The procedure for sealants begins with your dentist thoroughly cleaning and drying the tooth. Cotton placed around the tooth helps keep it dry throughout the procedure. An etching solution placed onto the tooth slightly roughens the tooth to help in the bonding process. Then, your dentist rinses and dries the tooth and brushes the liquid sealant onto the tooth. The sealant hardens, sometimes with the help of a special light, and the sealant is permanently in place.

Getting crowns can be easy and fast thanks to CEREC same-day technology.dental crowns

When people think about getting crowns they often assume that they will need to come in for several visits, which can really affect someone’s busy schedule. So you’ll be happy to hear that our Provo, UT, dentist, Dr. Gary Wiest, makes it possible to get a dental crown in just one visit.

When is a dental crown necessary?

This hollow tooth-shaped cap is custom-made to fit over a tooth for several reasons. In most cases, the crown is meant to become a reliable barrier to protect a weak or damaged tooth. A tooth that has been affected by decay, infection or trauma may continue to weaken over time, so it’s important that our Provo general dentist places a restoration over the entire tooth to protect it. In most cases, a crown is the best option.

Of course, a crown may also be used to improve the shape, size or color of a tooth, as well. If a tooth is badly malformed or discolored, we may recommend getting a crown to improve the tooth’s appearance.

Besides offering restorative and cosmetic benefits for a tooth, a crown can also be used to support and stabilize a dental bridge or can be used to cover a dental implant.

What is a CEREC crown?

When people think about crowns they often think about the fact that they will have to come in multiple times to our office to have the tooth prepared, impressions taken and then to wait a week or more for a dental lab to make the crown before placing it. But what if we told you there is a way to get a dental crown in just one visit?

Now, our Provo restorative dentist has the technology and software to design, fabricate and place your crown right here in the office in about one hour. A handheld camera is used to capture photos of the tooth, which are then turned into 3D images on the computer. The CEREC software then allows us to use these measurements to create a crown that offers a precise and accurate fit.

Once the crown is designed, we will choose the shade of porcelain that will best match your smile before the milling station gets to work chiseling out your new restoration from a porcelain block (all while you wait!). When the crown is complete, it’s time to check its fit before cementing it over your tooth.

If you have questions about CEREC crowns and whether this is the right option for improving a damaged tooth then it’s time you turned to the dental experts at Provo Dental in Provo, UT. Call our office today!

Dental crowns are a crucial part of many dental procedures and can restore or even preserve your tooth’s natural structure. However, dental crownstraditional crowns take several dental appointments with weeks in between, causing you time and effort. Luckily, Provo Dental in Provo, UT, provides same day crowns, saving you that extra dental visit and cutting down your wait times significantly. Find out more about same day dental crowns with Dr. Gary Wiest.

What can a dental crown do for me?
A dental crown is a versatile dental restoration which can provide many treatments. Depending on your situation, a dental crown can:

  • restore the biting surface of a worn tooth
  • protect a tooth against damage after a large filling
  • stabilize a damaged or broken tooth
  • preserve a tooth’s natural structure and prevent extraction
  • hold a dental bridge in place
  • cover a dental implant to replace a missing tooth

How is a same day crown different from a traditional crown?
A dental crown fits over the tooth, requiring your dentist to prepare the tooth beforehand by removing parts of its enamel from the sides and top. If placing a traditional crown, your dentist will require two appointments. The first appointment will include preparing the tooth and taking a physical impression to send to the dental laboratory. Then, over the course of about two weeks, the lab creates the crown based on the impression. When the crown returns to your dentist’s office, you will have a second appointment to fit and place it onto your tooth.

Same day crowns cut out the laboratory step entirely, allowing your dentist to prepare the tooth, design and create the crown, and place and fit the crown all within the same appointment. This saves you time, effort, co-pays and even the additional fees associated with using the dental laboratory.
