Do You Need A Dental Crown?

Getting crowns can be easy and fast thanks to CEREC same-day technology.dental crowns

When people think about getting crowns they often assume that they will need to come in for several visits, which can really affect someone’s busy schedule. So you’ll be happy to hear that our Provo, UT, dentist, Dr. Gary Wiest, makes it possible to get a dental crown in just one visit.

When is a dental crown necessary?

This hollow tooth-shaped cap is custom-made to fit over a tooth for several reasons. In most cases, the crown is meant to become a reliable barrier to protect a weak or damaged tooth. A tooth that has been affected by decay, infection or trauma may continue to weaken over time, so it’s important that our Provo general dentist places a restoration over the entire tooth to protect it. In most cases, a crown is the best option.

Of course, a crown may also be used to improve the shape, size or color of a tooth, as well. If a tooth is badly malformed or discolored, we may recommend getting a crown to improve the tooth’s appearance.

Besides offering restorative and cosmetic benefits for a tooth, a crown can also be used to support and stabilize a dental bridge or can be used to cover a dental implant.

What is a CEREC crown?

When people think about crowns they often think about the fact that they will have to come in multiple times to our office to have the tooth prepared, impressions taken and then to wait a week or more for a dental lab to make the crown before placing it. But what if we told you there is a way to get a dental crown in just one visit?

Now, our Provo restorative dentist has the technology and software to design, fabricate and place your crown right here in the office in about one hour. A handheld camera is used to capture photos of the tooth, which are then turned into 3D images on the computer. The CEREC software then allows us to use these measurements to create a crown that offers a precise and accurate fit.

Once the crown is designed, we will choose the shade of porcelain that will best match your smile before the milling station gets to work chiseling out your new restoration from a porcelain block (all while you wait!). When the crown is complete, it’s time to check its fit before cementing it over your tooth.

If you have questions about CEREC crowns and whether this is the right option for improving a damaged tooth then it’s time you turned to the dental experts at Provo Dental in Provo, UT. Call our office today!
