Close Up Chips And Cracks With Bonding

Not everyone is blessed with a perfectly beautiful smile. Gaps and mild overlapping mar smile appearance, and accidental chipping and dental bondingcracking impact your self-confidence. What's the solution to these problems? Your Provo, UT, dentist, Dr. Gary Wiest offers composite resin bonding, a quick, economical and effective way to blend away minor cosmetic issues. Check it out at Provo Dental.

What is composite resin bonding?

Bonding applies a mix of glass particles and inorganic plastic compounds to reshape small dental defects. Dear Doctor explains that larger or more complex chips, gaps, cracks or craze line require a higher percentage of plastic in the resin mix, and that your Provo, UT, dentist also can vary the material's shade so it exactly matches the existing tooth structure.

Besides reshaping defects, composite resin restores decay. A great alternative to metal amalgam, resin makes a filling which is strong and lifelike in appearance. It requires far less enamel reduction and places less stress on remaining tooth structure because composite resin flexes when the patient bites and chews on the tooth.

Treatment details

To prepare a tooth for bonding, Dr. Wiest lightly sands the surfaces to be bonded. Then he applies a mild acid solution which helps the resin adhere to the tooth.

He applies the resin in layers and hardens each layer with a special light. He continues layering until reaching the best size, shape and thickness. A final trimming, sanding and polishing finishes the restoration. Depending on the extent of the repair, the treatment may take about half an hour from start to finish.

Caring for composite resin

Repairs made with composite resin last from five to ten years. Good brushing and flossing are key, as are your regular six-month examinations and cleanings with Dr. Wiest.

While composite resin is very durable, it can stain as natural tooth enamel does. So avoid tobacco, and limit coffee, sports drinks and acidic foods as much as possible.
